The Governor

University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) 2024/2025

Known as The Governor — former UNZASU President and 2026 Kitwe Mayoral candidate, and a leading voice on youth leadership and national development.

Biography

Professional journey.

Dixon Young Mutambo, widely known by his popular moniker “The Governor,” is a prominent Zambian student politician, youth leader, speaker, and legal professional. He rose to national prominence as the President of the University of Zambia Students Union (UNZASU) for the 2024/2025 academic year. He later transitioned into mainstream national politics, contesting the Mayoral seat for the City of Kitwe in the 13 August 2026 general elections.

Elected in a highly contested race in October 2024, Mutambo defeated his primary rival Peter Chabu to secure the UNZASU presidency and was officially sworn into office on October 30, 2024. Before leading UNZASU at Zambia's premier learning institution, he served as Secretary General at Chalimbana University and as an advisor to a former UNZASU president. He is recognized for maintaining a pragmatic, non-partisan stance — focusing on collaborative engagement with university management and government to advance student interests.

Shifting from campus politics to civic leadership, Mutambo contested the Mayor of Kitwe under the “Whistle” symbol (Symbol Yatatu/Whistle) in the 13 August 2026 general elections. Although he was unsuccessful in the election, his campaign framed youth leadership as a tangible advantage for local governance, advocating that voters choose “substance over age” to spark economic and community development on the Copperbelt.

Beyond politics, Mutambo is a sought-after speaker and panelist at high-profile youth conferences such as the BeRelevant Youth Summit, and he has personally sponsored dozens of students to attend these leadership platforms. He is also active in humanitarian work — leading motivational speaking sessions at local orphanages and driving sanitary-towel distribution campaigns for disadvantaged girls.
